Connecting a Capacitor for AC Motors

Postby om_tech_support_JT » Tue Sep 14, 2010 5:29 pm

Q: How do I connect a 4-prong capacitor with my AC motor?

A: Please see page A-313 in the linked document below for a diagram that explains the wiring the best: ... _insta.pdf

Use the wiring diagram above with the motor's standard connection diagram for full details such as how to wire a switch with these wires.

Basically, in a proper connection, you have 3 connections on the capacitor at any one time. The capacitor will have 4 prongs. 2 are paired together on one side, and the other 2 are paired on the other side. The motor's red wire will connect to one prong on one side of the capacitor, and the motor's white wire will connect to a prong that's on the opposite side of the capacitor. Now, there should be 2 open prongs left on the capacitor; one on each side. Depending on which direction you want to go, you would supply your LIVE AC line to either the open prong on the red side or the white side. The motor's black wire is always permanently connected to the NEUTRAL AC line.
