Duty Cycle Rating for AC Electromagnetic Brake Motors

Postby om_tech_support_JT » Tue Jun 19, 2012 3:36 pm

Q: For your AC electromagnetic brake motors, why are the duty cycle ratings for single-phase and three-phase motors different? You show "30 minutes" for single-phase motors, but "continuous" for three-phase motors.

A: In most cases for the single-phase type, the electromagnetic brake is attached to one of our reversible motors. Reversible motors have a built-in friction brake, and it has a recommended 50% duty cycle with a maximum “ON” time of 30 minutes to avoid overheating. The only time an electromagnetic brake is attached to a continuous duty induction motor is when 3 phase voltage is specified. Three-phase voltage is more efficient, thus allowing a standard induction motor to change directions on the fly without the help from a friction brake of a reversible motor.
