Surge Suppression for Reversible/synchronous Motors

Q: I am trying to connect a SMK216A-GN synchronous motor by following the connection diagram in the manual. I see there is a capacitor and resistor connected in series at the switch. What are those for and how do I select the capacitance and resistance values?


A: The capacitor and resistor in series connection shown in the diagram is actually a CR circuit for surge suppression.

The main purpose of this circuit is to protect the contact of the switch since there could be a large in rush current at the moment when the switch is closed, or switching directions. This is sold separately as an accessory, and the part number is EPCR1201-2. You can find this part on our website by using the link below:
