CAN-DO: 2-Axis Printing with Set Push Force in Absolute Mode

Inquiry:
I am designing a printing component for a packaging machine that processes a variety of parts. The size and material of the parts vary. The printing component consists of an actuator to move a print head vertically, and a motor to index parts. After the motor indexes the part to the desired position, the actuator moves the printer head down with fast speed to a pre-programmed position, and slow down to apply a push force to print on the parts. Absolute position feedback is required for both the actuator and the motor to avoid discarding of products due to initializing operations after power loss or emergency stop. Single phase AC 110 V input power is preferred.

Other requirements for the actuator:
1) It needs to be equipped with a load holding brake for safety when power is lost or in case of emergency stop
2) It is capable of a linked motion with two speeds
3) Maximum mass 10 Lb (4.5 kg), maximum speed 20 in/sec (508 mm/sec) and maximum stroke 10” (254 mm), push force up to 10 Lb (44.5 N)
4) 2 Nm pitching moment load due to the off-set mounting of the printer head
5) It needs to fit in a foot print less than 2.5” X 2.5”
6) It needs to control a push force depending on the product type
7) It needs feedback signals to confirm the motion was completed

Other requirements for the index motor;
1) It needs to be rated for continuous duty
2) Torque 10 Lb-in (1.1 Nm), speed 600 rpm
3) It needs feedback signals to confirm the motion was completed

Solution;
For the vertical actuator, our EZA4D030M-A motorized cylinder system may be a good fit for this application. This actuator is equipped with an electromagnetic brake that holds the load in its position when power is lost or when there’s an emergency stop condition. An optional battery pack is available for using the controller in absolute mode. With the battery, the controller can retain its position data for about 15 days. The actuator controller can link multiple motions in the same direction. You can also specify a push force for the last linked motion. The EZA motorized cylinder is also unique in its structure. Unlike conventional electrical cylinders, our EZA series has a built-in linear guide that supports the pitching, yawing and rolling moment loads without an external support guide. We also use a rectangular design for the rod of the actuator. This design eliminates the need for an external guide or an anti-rotation mechanism which would be required for conventional electrical cylinders. Therefore, it allows a compact design of the system. This EZA series also offers very useful outputs. The T-UP output will turn ON when it reaches the preset push-force, and the AREA output will turn ON when the actuator reaches its designated position range. If you combine these outputs with a master controller (PLC), you can verify if a motion was done successfully before moving onto the next operation.

For the index motor, our NX610AA-PS5-3 servo motor system may be a good fit for this application. The NX servo motor is a tuning-free servo motor that can be used just like a stepping motor while maintaining the benefits of a servo. The NX servo motor can be set to absolute mode with the optional battery pack. The absolute encoder data (20bits/one rotation and 16 bits/multiple rotations) will be retained by the driver for about 2 years. The NX servo motor driver also offers an END output to indicate when a move was successfully made.
