Dual Motor Rack and Pinion Backlash Control?

Postby Zeb » Fri Nov 18, 2016 2:45 pm

I have seen rack and pinion drives systems that use two pinions, each driven by it's own motor. At a standstill, the motors oppose each other to control backlash, and keep position. During acceleration, the motors both drive in the same direction to provide maximum power for acceleration.

Has anyone else heard of this? Can it be done with any Oriental products? Hopefully AR98's, or similar. We have used those in the past, but had to use mechanical backlash eliminators.

Hi Zeb,

Oriental Motor offers linear heads which can be combined with a wide range of standard AC motors. This type of rack and pinion system is only available with a single motor combination.

If you are looking for a more accurate linear system, then I would recommend looking into either the EAS or EAC series linked below:

Separate from the linear systems, we also offer a wide range of gearheads for the AR series. These gearheads range from Low backlash to Non-backlash depending on what your application requires. A harmonic gearhead, for example will provide 0 backlash. Please reference the link below for the description of the gearheads that we offer:
