stepper encoder

Postby ahgu » Fri Jul 28, 2017 7:46 am

I have this encoder from a stepper, all 4 wires have small resistance. Is this a type of hall sensor?

Hi ahgu,

Do you have the part number for this stepper motor? Also, was there a separate concern or question that you had about the motor's construction? The picture that you show looks to be of the stator windings and motor cable. Typically an encoder is going to be used on a stepper motor and they can either be an incremental or absolute type encoders. Encoders are used for keeping track of the rotations of a motor. More information on the differences of the encoder types can be found in the link below:

Hall-effect sensors are typically part of a Brushless DC motor package. The Hall-Effect sensors are used in order to maintain speed of the Brushless DC motors.

can you tell what plastic is the white plastic? Is that normally used in stepper?
I thought stepper get pretty hot.

Hi ahgu,

The white plastic is an insulated plastic and its purpose is to provide insulation. Our standard steppers have an insulation Class B [130°C (266°F)]. In order to make sure that the internal windings do not exceed this temperature, then it is advised to make sure that the motor case temperature operates below 80°C (176°F) while still operating in the ambient temperature range of the motor.
