BLM460S-GFV high pitch sound

Postby robv » Mon Jan 12, 2015 2:15 pm

We have a machine with (2) BMU460SA-100A-3 systems. One of the motors is running at almost full speed (runs a pulley with a small belt) and has a constant high pitch whine that is quite annoying. We run the other motor much slower (runs a chain) and it is fine (although we can turn it up and it to produces that sound.) Is this sound normal?

Hi robv,

Noise is associated with motor speed, and noise increases as speed increases. For example, you have ball bearing noise, gear noise as well as noise generated from the driver PWM circuit. There also could be noise generated by your pulleys, belts, sprockets, or chains. I would first suggest to remove the pulleys and sprockets, then operate both, while unloaded, at the same exact speed to compare noise. This is the best way to determine if your noise is normal or not.

With that said, since both of your motors generate the same noise at high speeds, I would say it's normal. If it is just motor noise, we would suggest that you upsize the motor and add a lower gear ratio so the motor can run at lower speeds.
