AZ AR comparison

Oriental Motor offers a wide range of motion control products. Our current Alpha step series are the AZ and AR series stepper motors. To understand which series is best suited for your application, it is important to know the differences between them. Below are some highlight features of the AR series stepper motor and driver when compared to the AZ series.

Notes
• AR can use an extension cable up to 30 meters
o whereas the AZ has a maximum length of 20 meters
• AR has an absolute range up to 167,772.16 revolutions with the accessory battery. This is calculated using the formula (2^23 steps×3.6 step angle×2)÷360 degrees=167,772.16 revolutions. This is a software limit
o For comparison, AZ has an absolute range of up to 1800 revolutions. This is a mechanical limit
• AR has a NEMA 34 DC input stepper. As a note, the AR NEMA 34 DC input stepper has a very similar torque curve to the AZ NEMA 24 DC input stepper. Benefit of the larger frame size is more inertia. AR does not offer a NEMA 8.
o The AZ only offers a NEMA 34 in the AC Input side of the family line. Currently the highest frame size for the DC Input AZ is NEMA 24. AZ offers a NEMA 8 stepper
• AR offers a vacuum rated stepper
• For position feedback AR offers a Resolver and AZ offers an absolute mechanical encoder.
o The resolver is able to withstand higher temperatures letting the AR operate in higher ambient conditions. It has no mechanical parts. A battery is required to make the AR series an absolute system as the position is stored in the driver.
o The absolute mechanical encoder does not need a battery to be an absolute system. The position is stored in the encoder.
• Ambient operating temperatures
o The AR can operate continuously from -10-50 C (14-122 F); the AZ can operate continuously between a temperature of 0-40 C (32-104 F)
• The AR is shorter in overall length than the AZ
o This is because the resolver is shorter than the absolute mechanical encoder. Typically it’s 5-8 mm longer depending on the series
• The AR series only has 1 cable that includes motor and resolver in one
o AZ in comparison has a separate cable for the stepper and encoder
• AR is offered with a double stack planetary gearbox for low backlash (N style gearbox)
• AR is offered with a Devicenet driver, ARD-CDN
o AZ is offered with an EtherNET I/P, EtherCAT, MECHATROLINK-III, and SSCNET III/H driver. AZ is the only series that is capable of cyclic synchronous motion over EtherCAT, MECHATROLINK-III, and SSCNET III/H network communication.
• AR has a hollow shaft gearbox for NEMA 34 with the FR series gearbox
• The pulse input AR driver does not require a 24 VDC control power supply for operation
• The AR Built in Controller type can be programmed with the OPX-2A control module making programming machines in the field easier and offering a digital display
• AR has an Automatic Return Operation parameter. This parameter can be utilized in the event the stepper moves when motor excitation is removed at automatically return to the last position when excitation is turned back on
